Although
the methods used overlap to some extent, a distinction should be made
between testing and calibration. Testing is a routine operation to
ensure that the performance of the pipette remains within
pre-established acceptable limits. Calibration is an operation to
determine the actual volume delivered by a pipette together with an
uncertainty associated with that volume.
Testing is normally
performed by the user; calibration can be performed by the user or by a
calibration laboratory specialising in such work.
